Has anyone else tried windows 7? You can download the RC for free from Microsoft's website. I also heard a rumour the final release version has been leaked.
I'm using it right now. In one sentence: Good but not great. A fuller review will come in a couple of days.

I've tried it. I didn't do much with it since all of my software etc. is already installed on my Vista copy, and I only gave 20GB to the Windows 7 partition on my hard drive (I have a laptop, so I'm sort of pressed for space).
Seems pretty good so far. I didn't have a problem with Vista though so I'm not terribly surprised. I'll probably migrate everything over later when the real thing comes out, but I need to figure out where I can get the software and drivers for all of my peripherals, like the fingerprint reader and webcam.

Yeah. My sound required updates to make work, my printer isn't recognised, my scsi controller isn't recognised.
7's only got about 20 gigs here too. My 500gig drive has all my data on it, and my scsi drive isn't recognised by windows, so I had to pull the old 20 gig ide drive from my old computer.

Well, I actually have two computers that I use, both laptops although the older one has a broken screen so it's more like a desktop connected to an external monitor. I wanted to install Windows 7 on the old one but then decided against it since all of my stuff is saved there (although mostly on attached external HDDs) and since my laptop's internal drive evidently has a ton of hidden partitions and I can't add any more.
My sound works fine on Windows 7, although all the fancy software HP added to Vista obviously hasn't been reinstalled. I had to download the dedicated Nvidia drivers for my graphics card to use my full screen resolution (1920x1080) since Windows 7's own drivers evidently only go up to 1280x720 and I'm a screen resolution Nazi.
I'm pretty sure they'll update the drivers by the time the real thing comes out. They'd have to, but from what I hear, any software that's compatible with Vista should be compatible with Windows 7.
The one major gripe I've heard about it is that a few people had problems with soft subtitles when playing back anime fansubs. Others have had no problems with it, or fixed it when they downloaded the latest codec packs.

Well I've never run any other windows OS on this machine. My primary OS is Linux, specifically Ubuntu.
I've got a resolution problem too. Windows had set it to 1280x1024, the max for my monitor, but an incorrect aspect ratio. 1280x960 is the correct aspect ratio, but Windows won't do that, so I have to drop to 1152x864. Which is bearable (in fact it's what I usually use on Linux, for readability of text), but slightly annoying that the higher res isn't supported.

Do you have a discrete graphics card or integrated? If it's discrete then you can just download the drivers to fix the problem as long as your monitor is recognized. I think if you have integrated graphics you could do that too, just visit the manufacturer's website to get them.

It's seperate. An nVidia 6800 I think.
I didn't think to check the drivers for it. That said, Aero seemed to run fine, so I guess the 3d accel must have been there. Anyway, I'm back to Ubuntu now.
Any suggestions for what to try next weekend? OSX perhaps? I've heard it can be made to run on non-Apple hardware. Or maybe Plan 9?

Any suggestions for what to try next weekend? OSX perhaps? I've heard it can be made to run on non-Apple hardware. Or maybe Plan 9? OSX needs a special modchip to run on non-Apple hardware since it doesn't use BIOS. You need to plug the chip into your motherboard to establish an EFI operating environment unless you want to track down a system that actually uses EFI rather than BIOS. But aside from that, it can be done.
